Clinical Trials

Clinical Trials

A patient sees an information banner in their record when their record matches the criteria for a clinical research trial. If a patient is interested in a trial, the patient can share their record with the medical team running the trial.

This gives each patient the opportunity to access new treatments and to contribute to improving future care for others facing similar conditions.

How does PKB match patients to clinical trials?

Patients Know Best (PKB) software includes a rules engine. Research organisations provide their trials to the PKB rules engine. For each patient, the PKB rules engine checks the trials against the information in the patient’s record. PKB software does this securely, automatically and anonymously.

Will my data be shared without my permission?

PKB does not share your record. Only you can share your record with the research teams of trials that interest you. You can stop or change your sharing at any time with any research team. You are in control at all times.

What are the benefits of clinical trials?

Today’s cures came after yesterday’s trials. Tomorrow’s cures need trials today. The more patients take part in research, the more quickly researchers find cures.

Matching patients to clinical trials increases awareness and access to potentially life-changing treatments that may not be available through standard care. Making trial opportunities more visible helps ensure that research is inclusive, patient-centred, and driven by real-world needs.

How can I join a clinical trial?

If you are interested in a clinical trial you see in PKB, click ‘Share my record’ in the banner. In the next screen, confirm you want to share your record with the research team.

The research team can then review your details and contact you. They will give you further information about the trial and ask you for more detailed information about your health. With all the information, they can decide if the trial is suitable for you and you can decide if you want to join the trial.

Where can I find the banner?

If you match the criteria for a trial, the banner will currently appear:

  • Under the navigation tiles on your homepage

  • Below your messages on the Events & Messages page (this page is also accessible from the NHS app)

  • On the Tests screen (this page is also accessible from the NHS app)

  • On the Imaging screen (this page is also accessible from the NHS app)
