PKB (Patients Know Best) is fully integrated with the NHS Wales App and NHS login, allowing citizens aged 16 and over to access, manage, and share their health information securely.

As the first third-party solution integrated into the NHS Wales App, PKB offers a seamless and familiar user experience. Initially launched in Swansea Bay University Health Board and backed by Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW), the rollout supports more equitable, connected, and person-centred care across all Health Boards in Wales.

Through PKB, patients gain real-time access to clinical information – including test results, clinic letters, and hospital data – directly from national NHS Wales systems.

Enabling PKB within the NHS Wales App has already shown significant uptake in registrations, as demonstrated in screenshots below after Swansea Bay following launch.

Setting Up PKB In The NHS Wales APP

PKB only appears for a patient in the NHS Wales APP if the patient's GP's ODS code has been configured to show PKB and the Organisation has been approved to show the PKB jump-offs.

Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW) is creating an access agreement for Health Boards to submit to Digital Services for Patients and the Public (DSPP), requesting that PKB jump-offs be configured for their patients. 

This agreement is not currently available. Please contact your PKB Project Manager or Account Manager to configure your Health Board or Hospital to display the PKB screens.

Using PKB in the NHS Wales APP

If the ODS code is correctly configured, tapping the Medical Record button in the NHS Wales App will display the Health page from PKB. From there, patients can access the full range of PKB features.

First-Time Use

When a patient uses PKB for the first time through their NHS login, they will be asked to enter their PKB login. The quickest way to onboard patients is by mass-registering them with a PKB login in advance.

If a patient does not yet have a PKB login or PKB record, the PKB system will automatically create one for them during the process.

Linking NHS Login and PKB Login

Patients only need to link their NHS login with their PKB login once, and this can be done through any channel, either the NHS Wales App or the PKB website.

• If the patient links their accounts in the NHS Wales App, they can later log into the PKB website using NHS login.

• If they link their accounts on the PKB website, they can then use PKB seamlessly within the NHS Wales App, without needing to log in again (since they are already logged into the app with their NHS login).

This secure linking process ensures patients can move between the app and the website smoothly, without repeated logins.

Mass Registration 

The fastest and best way to onboard patients onto the NHS Wales APP is to mass register the patients with PKB Login.

Patients With Data From PKB Customer

Providers can release more data into the PKB record than the NHS Wales APP's GP record. PKB shows all this data to the patient inside the NHS Wales APP, including hospital test results, appointments, library links and care plans.

Patients Without Data From a PKB Customer

All PKB users – with or without data from PKB customers – can benefit from using PKB's patient-held record functionality. A patient can add medicines not included in the NHS Wales APPs' GP record, record measurements like peak flow, add upcoming appointments, record in their journal, and create their own care plan. This functionality makes their next appointment more efficient and any emergency care more safe.

Effort Required By Local Hospital Staff

PKB handles all different scenarios with the patient without requiring any support from local health care providers. PKB's software walks the patient through their options. If a patient is stuck, they contact the PKB support desk on help@patientsknowbest.com, and PKB employees handle the questions. 

None of the hospitals using PKB in the NHS Wales APP have reported any queries from patients to staff.
