Introduction

Wales is at the forefront of a nationwide digital health transformation, with Patients Know Best (PKB) serving as the Personal Health Record (PHR) solution for patients in Swansea Bay and Hywel Dda University Health Boards, as well as renal centres in North Wales and Cardiff, are already using PKB to access a wide range of digital health services. 

PKB is fully integrated with the NHS Wales App and NHS login, enabling citizens aged 16 and over to access, manage, and securely share their health information. 

NHS Wales App

As the first third-party solution integrated with the NHS Wales App, PKB offers a seamless and familiar user experience. Initially available to patients within Swansea Bay University Health Board and backed by Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW), this rollout aims to support equitable, joined-up care across all Health Boards. PKB empowers patients with real-time access to clinical information, including test results and clinic letters directly from national NHS Wales data systems. 

With the broadest integration of any PHR in the UK and a strong presence in both NHS England and NHS Wales, PKB is uniquely positioned to deliver secure, person-centred care at scale, empowering every eligible resident across Wales to take control of their health.

Supporting the National Welsh Government Strategy

Patients Know Best (PKB) directly supports the Welsh Government’s national strategy by enabling people to take greater control of their health across their entire care journey. Aligned with the strategy’s three pillars: Promote, Prevent, and Prepare.

PKB is available in the NHS Wales App for patients in Swansea, resulting in an immediate increase in registrations from day one.

Increasing registrations means more empowered patients for the Health Boards and more patients have access to their health information digitally, saving appointments, admin time and postal costs.

Current Status

PKB is the first third-party solution to integrate with the NHS Wales App. The integration will be initially available to patients in Swansea Bay before being rolled out across Wales.
