Question

Answer

Can any measurements be sent to PKB?

No, only measurements in these lists of SNOMED codes are accepted by PKB

Can multiple measurements be sent in one ORU message?

Yes, multiple measurements can be sent by including multiple OBX segments in the ORU message.

How does PKB know if an ORU message is a measurement, rather than a lab or radiology result?

If the ORU message contains in the OBX-3.3 segment, a SNOMED code in the accepted measurements list, the message will be recognised as containing measurements.

There are comments in the message? Why are they not showing?

Although NTE segments are accepted in ORU messages, they are only surfaced when used in a Results message. When sending Measurements, any NTE segments will be silently ignored.

Do measurements have to be sent as SNOMED codes or can other codes be used?

Measurements must be sent as SNOMED codes. This ensures that measurements are tracked consistently across the whole system.

Can multi value measurements be sent to PKB?

This is only supported for Blood Pressure measurements. A list of supported multi-measurement SNOMED codes for blood pressure can be found here.

Can you update a measurement already sent to PKB?

No. As there is no unique identifier associated with individual measurements, there is no way to update measurements other than by doing a delete and resend.

Can measurements be deleted?

Yes, however if multiple measurements were sent to PKB in one ORU message, they can only be deleted in bulk. This is done by sending another ORU message with the same Filler Order Number, but with a status of ‘R’ in the OBR-25.1 field.

Can privacy labels be applied to measurements?

No, it is not possible to apply specific privacy labels to measurements. All measurements are automatically given the General Health privacy label, regardless of how they are entered into the patient record.

Can patient delays be added to measurements?

No. The customer access rule option in OBX-13 is only usable when sending radiology and pathology results.

If a patient delay is included in a measurement message it will be silently ignored.
