Introduction

Patients Know Best (PKB) has integrated with the NHS App and NHS login to provide patients in England with secure access to their health records and related services. This integration allows patients to use their NHS login credentials to authenticate and access their PKB record.

To ensure the highest level of security, PKB requires a High Level Verification (P9) from the NHS login service. This means a patient's identity has been confirmed at the highest level of verification e.g., via photo ID and a face scan.

This integration aims to empower patients by giving them more control over their health information and facilitating better communication with healthcare professionals, all while maintaining the highest standards of security.

How PKB, The NHS App, and NHS Login Work Together

PKB, the NHS App, and NHS login interoperate to provide patients with secure, streamlined access to their health information and NHS services.

PKB

  • A Personal Health Record: PKB is a central repository for a patient's health information, including medical history, test results, medications, letters, appointments, care plans, and more.

  • Patient-Controlled: Patients control who can access their PKB record. They can share information with healthcare professionals in different settings (GPs, hospitals, community services), as well as with family members and carers.

  • Integration Capabilities: PKB is designed to integrate with various NHS systems and is now deeply integrated with the NHS App. It also supports the addition of data from wearable devices and patient-entered information.

NHS App

  • National Digital Front Door: The NHS App provides a single point of access for patients to a range of NHS services on their smartphones or tablets.

  • Key Features: Through the NHS App, patients can:

    • Order repeat prescriptions.

    • Book and manage GP appointments.

    • Access health information and advice.

    • Increasingly, view their health record securely through integrations like PKB.

    • Receive messages and notifications from their healthcare providers.

    • Manage hospital referrals and appointments.

    • Contact their GP surgery for advice or administrative queries.

NHS Login

  • Secure Authentication: NHS login is a secure identity verification system that allows patients to prove who they are online to access various digital health services, including the NHS App and PKB.

  • Single Sign-On: Once patients have set up their NHS login, they can use the same credentials (email and password, often with a security code) to access integrated services like PKB through the NHS App, streamlining the login process.

Key Benefits

Integrating PKB with the NHS App and NHS login improves patients' access to and management of their health records, enabling a more seamless experience.

Accessing PKB via the NHS App

Patients can conveniently access their complete PKB record and all the information directly through the NHS App.

Single sign-on

Securely accessing PKB is simple with NHS login within the NHS App, eliminating the need for patients to remember separate login details

Comprehensive view

Patients gain a comprehensive view of their health by accessing combined data from various NHS sources (including hospital, GP records, and other care settings) all within their PKB via the NHS App.

Improves care coordination

Patients have control over who can access their PKB record, allowing them to securely share information with healthcare professionals across different NHS organisations involved in their care.

Data sharing

Empowers patients to easily share their health information with all their healthcare providers, improving joined-up care.

Empowerment and engagement

Keeps patients informed and enables them to participate actively in their healthcare journey.

Current Status and Rollout

The integration of PKB with the NHS App is being rolled out regionally across England. It is currently available to users in regions where it has been specified as the Patient Held Record (PHR) provider.

From May 2025, the rollout of the GP data integration allows patients in England to add their GP information to their PKB record via NHS login. Patients receive a notification within their PKB account to opt in to this feature.
